PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY IN AN X-RATED WORLD

We are committed to assisting you and your family to have a safe web experience.  The information provided on this page is to inform you of the dangers that await your family on the web, and to give you practical steps in dealing with them.  The world your child/family lives in is inundated with pornographic images.  It is important that parents take an active role in securing their family members from this destructive form of media.  Suggested reading:  “Protecting Your Child In An X-Rated World” by Frank York & Jan LaRue.  This book may be purchased from Focus on the Family.

SUGGESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE SELECTING FILTER OPTIONS

If this filter is for a family, and there is a trusted administrator in the home, having software with a “password” override is suggested.

If this filtering is for someone who does not have someone to help administrate/oversee, it is suggested that a Filtered Internet Service Provider be used.  This will insure that passwords are not “cracked” or “bypassed.”

Determine whether or not you need to filter email, chat rooms, and news groups before considering a filtering option; i.e. know the primary purpose and the internet usage of your family to insure that the proper safeguards are in place.

Examine all the costs involved with the filtering options.  Some are more expensive than others.  Determine your needs then weigh the costs.  The “need” should be of primary concern.

If you have teenage children surfing the web, and you know nothing about computers and the internet, you should most definitely be using a Filtered Internet Service Provider; example:  www.afo.net or www.integrityonline.com.

Take classes or sit down with your children while they are surfing.   Get to know what they are doing online.  Have the computer in a public area of the home.  Allow them to teach you how to surf the web.  Don’t be apathetic.  Unmonitored access to the internet is an unsafe area for children and teens.

There are many companies producing filtering software at this time.  The best way to find the right one for you and your family is to do an internet search (example:  Internet Filtering Software), and do some research.  We have listed various filtering options below that are the most common and highly rated.

Filtering internet providers could be a good solution if you are not currently connected to a provider, or you would be willing to switch.   Visit www.familyinternet.about.com to view the pro’s and con’s of Filtering ISP’s.  They also offer an extended list of current providers.

Please note that filtering software is not 100% effective, and you should still keep a close watch on what your children are viewing.  Filtering ISP’s are very effective, but can block sites that adults may need to access.
