Bridge to Crafts Careers Landscape Restoration Program
Woodlawn’s Landscape Restoration Program offers career and workforce development for students in our community. This 10-week paid internship will include both hands-on and classroom learning here at Woodlawn. This program is generously funded by the new Advance and Earn initiative, which was launched in 2020 by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development. Involvement from The Door will assist with implementation of workforce development skills and the Davey Institute, the research, education, and training arm of The Davey Tree Expert Company will appoint instructors to teach subjects such as small tree and shrub pruning, planting of perennials, tree, and shrubs, post-planting care and landscape bed maintenance.
Held on the grounds of The Woodlawn Cemetery, the Landscape Restoration Program employs an enthusiastic group of high school graduates ages 18-24. A goal of the Landscape Restoration Program is to assist participants in applying for jobs and to help them to meet the challenges that face young people when they work to sustain a career.
The Door, a youth development agency with wrap-around services, assists Interns with resume preparation, job interviews and placement and offers counseling services to help with issues such as housing, child care and financial management.
Through classroom and hands on sessions, Interns will learn the following:
- String trimming, mowing, leaf & grass blowing
- Landscape bed maintenance
- Shrub and small tree pruning
- OSHA-30 Safety Certification
- Flagging and other necessary certifications
